University of Florida

Message from the Department Chair, Geoffrey Dahl, Ph.D.

Welcome to the Department of Animal Sciences

The Department of Animal Sciences is an academic department of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, (CALS), a unit of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) at the University of Florida (UF).  The Department has more than thirty faculty members, supporting research, teaching, extension, and youth programs.  We have programs in genetics, management, meat science, molecular biology, nutrition, and reproduction and physiology, relating to animal agriculture.   Our faculty integrates the most modern technologies available with personal expertise and attention to the needs of students and our industry, utilizing the University’s main campus facilities, five research units in the Gainesville area, and three statewide research and education centers. With a $6.8 billion dollar annual economic impact in Florida, animal agriculture, which includes the poultry, beef, dairy, and horse industries, is crucial to Florida’s economy and the health of its citizens.    Our programs focus on the success and sustainability of animal agriculture under unique subtropical and tropical conditions.  The scale ranges from local to global.  Florida’s livestock industry faces unique challenges; urban growth, global competition, changing consumer demands, and economic and environmental sustainability.  The Department of Animal Sciences performs a critical role in educating the next generation of managers, veterinarians and related personnel, in support of our livestock and meat industries. More than five hundred students are enrolled in one of the five undergraduate program options: Animal Biology, Beef Industry, Dairy Industry, Equine Industry, or Meats Industry. Three graduate degrees are offered: Master of Science (non-thesis), Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy.
As Department Chair, I invite you to contact us with questions about our programs in support of healthy sustainable, animal systems.
